Michigan Cops Nab "Grass" Haul in Grass Lake

GRASS LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- This township lived up to its name when authorities reported finding about 1,200 pounds of marijuana in a tractor-trailer.

The driver, a 43-year-old man from Tucson, Ariz., was jailed after Sunday's bust at a weigh station along Interstate 94 in Grass Lake Township, about 75 miles west of Detroit.

The trucker had been stopped for what state police called an equipment violation. An inspection turned up 48 bales of marijuana hidden among a shipment of sports drinks.

What a difference a few years can make.As lawmakers prepare for Wednesday's start of the 2008 legislative session, illegal immigration is again on the radar, but this time, state officials have created a wake in their rush to propose restrictions and penalties.More than a half-dozen legislators plus Gov. Matt Blunt and Attorney General Jay Nixon have filed, ordered or floated ideas to restrict illegal immigrants and those who employ them."It's an epidemic. People have kind of skirted around the issue until this year," said Rep. Charles Portwood, who until this session had never filed an immigration bill in his six years in the Legislature.Portwood said e-mails from constituents prompted him to sponsor a broad measure based on an Oklahoma law.


Anderson County mom says 3-year-old daughter victim of lewd act

ANDERSON COUNTY — A 29-year-old man is under suspicion that he performed a lewd act upon a 3-year-old girl.

The alleged assault took place on Dean Springs Road sometime in the first seven months of 2007, according to the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.

The complaint was filed Saturday, according to the incident report.

An arrest has not been made.

Seattle Times publisher hints at deep cuts

That e-mail said Guild members were reporting to the Guild that The Times' East and North news bureaus would be consolidated into office space at the papers' shared Bothell printing plant, and that The Times' South King County and Washington, D.C., bureaus may be closed.

Larger and fewer newspaper-delivery routes may enable staff cuts, the union's e-mail said. And the Teamsters have said they plan to meet with Times management to consider a Times proposal to outsource all deliveries.

Times spokeswoman Corey Digiacinto said Thursday that the 2008 budget and "associated decisions" are still being finalized and that no announcements are likely until early 2008.

Thursday's five-page memo "is the first shoe, and the other will be dropping soon," said Guild administrative officer Liz Brown.
